February 2024 Monthly Index Returns
Happy March!
In stocks (equities):
- Stocks were mainly positive for the month with the exception of Intl small cap value (-0.8%) and non-US REITs (-5.6%).
- The S&P 500 closed over the 5,000 index level for the first time in February, and reached a new closing high level to end the month.
- Other record highs were also reached during February in the tech-heavy Nasdaq, in the Japanese Nikkei index 34 years after setting its previous high (yes, you read that right….34 years!), as did Europe’s Stoxx 600 index.
- Emerging market stocks gained 4.8% for the month, outperforming their developed peers that rose 1.7%.
In fixed income (bonds):
- Bonds were again mixed for the month with positive returns only coming from cash, ST and IT munis, and high yield.
- Stubborn inflation concerns caused US Treasury interest rates to rise across the curve over the month. Correspondingly, we witnesses negative US Treasury index returns.
- Global bonds ex-US (hedged to US) fell only -0.1% during February,
